Honda Plans Hybrid Push

DETROIT – Fueled by the new Insight and at least two more models in the pipeline, Honda Motor Co. Ltd. hopes to boost annual hybrid sales to 500,000 units in 2015.

In 2008, the auto maker sold 57,000 units, mostly Civic Hybrids, with several hundred Accord Hybrid.

If Honda achieves its target, hybrids will account for an estimated 10% of its global sales, says Yasunari Seki, the Insight’s chief engineer.

Seiki reiterates in an interview the auto maker plans to introduce a hybrid sports car in 2010. Then, probably in 2013 – although he would not confirm a launch date, Honda will follow with a hybrid version of the Fit, which may or may not be sold in North America.

The sports car will be based on the CR-Z concept unveiled at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show. Seki notes the production model will be equipped with the same motor and battery as the Insight but boast a more powerful engine, most likely displacing 1.5L. The Insight has a 1.3L engine. The CR-Z powerplant will not be turbocharged, he says.

Seki indicates the Fit Hybrid will employ the same single-motor system as the Insight, although most likely an improved version.

In developing the current model, Honda reduced hybrid system size and cost 30% and 40%, respectively, from that of the Civic Hybrid. The auto maker’s 5-year development target is for a further 25% size and cost reduction.

Including the Insight’s 101-volt nickel-metal-hydride battery pack, the Insight’s integrated motor assist (IMA) hybrid system weighs 128 lbs. (58 kg), 20% less than the Civic Hybrid system at 158 lbs. (72 kg).

Seki doesn’t confirm the cost of the Insight’s hybrid system, but does concede it is in the range of ¥100,000-¥150,000 ($1,000-$1,500).

The chief engineer notes the Insight’s model life will be five years and that Honda will have five hybrids in its lineup by 2015, meaning the Insight is likely to undergo another model change in 2014.

Meanwhile, he says no decision has been reached regarding Honda’s plans to switch to a lithium-ion battery pack from NiMH. But by making that move, he says, the auto maker would be able to cut battery size and weight in half, as Li-ion has twice the energy density of NiMH.

Bringing down battery costs is another matter, according to Seki, and will depend in part on increasing production volume.

On April 1, Honda entered into a joint venture with a subsidiary of GS Yuasa Corp. to develop and manufacture Li-ion batteries for hybrid vehicles. GS Yuasa says production startup is scheduled for 2013.

The battery will be based on GS Yuasa’s EH6 unit rated at 6 ampere-hours with energy density of 67 watt-hours per kg.

Separately, Tomohiko Kawanabe, a senior managing director at Honda R&D Co. Ltd., notes engineering targets for Li-ion batteries are between $500 and $800 per kWh, down from current $1,000-$2,000 levels. “I think $50 is necessary, but it is difficult to say when that can be achieved,” he says.

Seki also confirms Honda is developing a 2-motor hybrid system – although not necessarily the same concept as used by Toyota Motor Corp.’s Prius. However, the auto maker has no immediate plans to introduce such a model.

Nevertheless, the chief engineer believes 2-motor systems hold potential for larger vehicles, such as the Ridgeline pickup or Odyssey minivan. “We think the technology is good for fuel economy,” he says.

But a 2-motor setup is less viable for smaller cars, such as the Fit, Insight or Civic, due to packaging constraints, Seki contends. The Prius battery and motor-generator are 2.5 times larger than that of the Insight, he notes.

Concerning mild hybrid stop-start systems, Seki hints Honda is considering such technology for its minivehicle lineup – currently comprising such 0.66L models as the Life, Acty, Vamos and Zest. He gives no timeframe for such a debut, however.

Honda does not include stop-start systems in its hybrid sales forecasts.

Seki is confident Honda will meet the Insight’s 2010 sales goal of 200,000 units, although last December Honda CEO Takeo Fukui cast doubt on whether the target would be reached. And while Seki predicts North America will be the Civic Hybrid’s main market, he believes the Insight will make inroads into Europe, where Honda is projecting 2010 sales of more than 30,000 units.

In addition to Europe, Honda hopes to sell 100,000 Insights in North America (including 90,000 in the U.S.) and 60,000 in Japan.

Turning to the Insight’s suppliers, Seki confirms Sanyo Electric Co. Ltd. is producing the model’s battery pack. The unit, which like the Civic Hybrid’s 53-lb. (24-kg) pack employs 12 cylindrical cells per 14.4-volt module, weighs only 33 lbs. (15 kg), or 38% less.

The weight savings was achieved by using fewer modules – seven, compared with 11 for the Civic Hybrid. Power also was reduced as a result, from 158 volts to 101 volts.

In a technical paper presented at the SAE World Congress in April, Honda engineers say weight and volume of the power control unit was reduced 31% and 10%, respectively, by integrating the inverter, DC-DC converter and electronic control unit into a single package.

Specifically, the Insight’s inverter is 36% lighter and 35% smaller than the Civic Hybrid unit. The DC-DC converter is 46% lighter, largely the result of making the heat sink smaller, while the auto maker trimmed motor weight 15% by downsizing the stator and rotor yoke.

Other suppliers include Keihin Corp. (battery ECU, engine and transmission ECU and motor power drive unit), TDK Corp. (DC/DC converter) and Mitsubishi Electric Corp. (motor inverter).
Honda produces the Insight’s Multimatic S-CVT continuously variable transmission at its Hamamatsu, Japan, plant.

The auto maker assembles the hybrid’s 1.3L gasoline engine, motor and intelligent power unit on sublines in its Suzuka, Japan, facility.

A new motor line, which began operation in November, has capacity for 180,000 units, raising total motor production capacity on the plant’s two lines to 250,000.

Seki notes the auto maker has tripled motor production speed by improving winding operations and other processes.

Honda also manufactures the Insight’s regenerative braking system in-house, although sources say the car’s main braking system is from Continental AG.

The auto maker estimates 36% of Insight components are carried over from the Fit, Civic Hybrid and other models.

Road&Track dreamin’ of 2012 Toyota-Subaru sports coupe

This is not much of a news story than it is a drool job.

Road&Track: We’ve reported on this before, but we now have stronger evidence than ever that Toyota is getting back into the affordable sports-coupe game with an all-new model priced at around $20,000–$25,000. This front-engine/rear-drive 2-door will reincarnate the spirit of the 1983–1987 Corolla Levin/Trueno (AE86), a car that’s still popular today, especially among drift enthusiasts. According to our friends at Best Car magazine, Toyota’s code name for this future sports car is 086A. That it’s so similar to AE86 is no coincidence.

Toyota is partnering with Subaru to bring this project to reality. In fact, most of the engineering seems to be coming from the company known for its all-wheel-drive rally cars. Powering the future coupe will be Subaru’s 2.0-liter flat-4 equipped with a new direct-injection system, tuned to produce an impressive 200 bhp and 145 lb.-ft. of torque. We predict the car will weigh about 2700 lb., so expect fairly quick acceleration times, probably around 6.0 sec. to 60 mph. The suspension will consist of MacPherson struts up front and a multilink setup at the rear, with the chassis based on that of the Subaru Impreza and Legacy.

Toyota will mainly be in charge of the car’s styling. Although both Toyota and Subaru versions will be offered, the two models won’t look much different, apart from badging — think Toyota Matrix and Pontiac Vibe.

The car is scheduled to appear sometime in 2011 or 2012. If this future car truly is a reincarnation of the AE86, Toyota and Subaru will have a big hit on their hands.

2010 Honda Pilot High on Comfort and Versatility, Right on Size for Families

This is the first review I've seen of the 2010 Honda Pilot, expect ZERO changes in the Pilots from the 09's, so for all we know the reviewer was actually reviewing a 2009 anyway. I do know one thing and that is that 2010's are right around the corner.
The FINANCIAL -- The 2010 Honda Pilot crossover combines car-like road manners and around-town driving ease with the most sought-after SUV traits by virtue of its spacious interior, rugged character and all-weather confidence.

"The Pilot crossover offers practical SUV capabilities with the driving sophistication and refinement that people expect from a Honda," said Vicki Poponi, assistant vice president of Product Planning for American Honda Motor Co., Inc. "The combination of spacious eight-passenger seating, a comfortable ride and advanced fuel-saving technology help make the Pilot one of the most accommodating vehicles for children, work, errands and for longer trips with family and friends."

The 250-horsepower V-6 engine provides both performance and enhanced efficiency with Variable Cylinder Management, a technology that can deactivate up to three of the engine's six cylinders to save fuel when cruising or lightly accelerating. The available Variable Torque Management 4-Wheel-Drive (VTM-4) enhances traction in rain, snow and slippery terrain. All models are equipped with a standard towing receiver and a maximum tow rating of 4,500 pounds on 4WD models and 3,500 pounds on 2WD models1.

Consistent with contemporary SUV styling, the exterior conveys a bold and modular approach that also helps maximize interior space. Yet the Pilot still maintains a garage-friendly exterior size of less than 16 feet, requiring less space to park compared to other popular 8-passenger SUVs by a margin of 10 inches, and in some cases up to two feet.

The interior emphasizes an expansive feel with an efficient and modern design that supplies 152.7 cu-ft. of passenger space within three rows of seats. Adjustable storage compartments in the center console can accommodate items large and small from handbags to mobile phones. The instrument panel's wide center stack intelligently groups similar controls together for the audio system, climate controls and the available Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System and Honda DVD Entertainment System (if equipped). All models provide an auxiliary audio input jack for digital music players, and the Pilot Touring also includes Bluetooth HandsFreeLink™ and a USB audio interface2.

The first row provides a commanding view of the road from two bucket-style seats. The 60/40 split second row accommodates three passengers and slides forward for increased ease of access to the third row. The third row, also split 60/40, is designed to offer sufficient knee room for an average size adult. There are four Lower Anchor and Tether for Children (LATCH) attachment positions - more than any other crossover SUV - which provide options for three child seats in the second row and one in the third row. The 20.8 cu-ft of cargo space behind the third row matches or exceeds the trunk space of a typical large sedan and can accommodate items as large as a mid-size cooler or a folded stroller. A hidden storage well (2.8 cu-ft.) combines with the above floor storage area by securing the hinged floor panel against the seatback. Pilot EX-L and Touring models provide a load-supporting cargo net (20 pounds maximum weight) to further subdivide the rear cargo area. For maximum cargo, the second and third rows fold flat into the floor to create 87.0 cubic feet of storage capacity, while also providing sufficient width for 4-foot-wide items.

Safety technology includes the Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure that can enhance frontal collision compatibility with vehicles of different sizes and bumper heights. Additional safety equipment includes Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA), commonly referred to as Electronic Stability Control; three-row side curtain airbags with a rollover sensor; driver's and front passenger's side airbags with passenger-side Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS); active front seat head restraints; and anti-lock brakes with electronic brake distribution and brake assist. Since the 2009 model year, the Honda Pilot has earned the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) TOP SAFETY PICK and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA's) best-possible crash safety rating3 of 5 stars for both frontal and side impact performance.

The Pilot is powered by an advanced 24-valve i-VTEC engine with "intelligent" Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (i-VTEC) technology. Variable Cylinder Management allows the V-6 engine to operate in six-cylinder mode for power and four- or three-cylinder modes for efficiency. Fuel economy is an EPA-estimated4 city/highway/combined fuel economy of 17/23/19 miles per gallon on two-wheel-drive models and 16/22/18 miles per gallon on four-wheel-drive models. A 21-gallon fuel tank can comfortably provide a driving range of more than 400 miles on the highway.

The 5-speed automatic transmission features Grade Logic Control to help maintain the most appropriate gear when going uphill or downhill, thereby avoiding gear "hunting." The VTM-4 system (available) adds fully automatic four-wheel-drive capability. VTM-4 delivers seamless, "decision-free" application of four-wheel-drive when needed, a key benefit compared to conventional systems. The system also provides a "lock mode" - available when in first or second gears (up to 18 mph) and activated by a button on the instrument panel - that can deliver the maximum-possible torque transfer to the rear wheels to aid in extraction from extremely low traction or stuck conditions.

The unit-body construction makes extensive use of high-strength steel (52 percent) to minimize weight. The suspension is a fully independent system with front MacPherson strut and rear multi-link with trailing arm designs that contribute to responsive driving characteristics for an SUV. The 109.2-inch wheelbase facilitates a smooth ride and standard 17-inch wheels with P245 65 R17 all-season tires combine both on- and off-road performance. A turning diameter of 38.6 feet aids maneuverability in tight parking situations.

The Pilot is available in four model choices (LX, EX, EX-L and Touring); each offered in either a two-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive configuration. Standard comfort and convenience features on the Pilot LX include a front and rear air conditioning system with air-filtration system, keyless entry, tilt and telescope steering column, cruise control, power windows with auto-up/down driver's and passenger's window, power door and tailgate locks, AM/FM/CD stereo system with 7-speakers including subwoofer and Radio Data System (RDS), trip computer, digital compass, auto on/off headlights, heat-rejecting tinted glass, integrated class III towing receiver, and more.

The Pilot EX adds a tri-zone automatic climate control system with humidity control and air filtration, a power driver's seat with 10-way power adjustment with lumbar support, 6-disc in-dash CD changer, security system, XM Radio®5, body colored side mirrors and door handles, alloy wheels, roof rails, fog lights, exterior temperature indicator, HomeLink Remote System, and more.

The Pilot EX-L adds leather-trimmed seating surfaces, heated front seats, 4-way power front passenger's seat, one-touch power moonroof, acoustic windshield glass, automatic-dimming rearview mirror with rearview camera display (EX-L-exclusive), and the availability of the Honda DVD Rear Entertainment System with 9-inch screen (which also upgrades to the Premium Audio System with 10 speakers including subwoofer and adds a 115-volt power outlet), and more.

The top-of-the-line Pilot Touring adds the Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System with rearview camera, Premium Audio System, Bluetooth HandsFreeLink, USB Audio Interface, the availability of the Honda DVD Rear Entertainment System, Multi-Information display, corner and backup sensors, exclusive alloy wheels, power tailgate, side-mirror integrated turn indicators, and more.

Honda Cars For 2010 Will Include More Fuel Efficiency For Insight and Civic (Hybrid Odyssey?!?)

You'll want to keep reading to the end of this post (and I've even highlighted it).
Honda cars are entering a new generation of hybrid technologies, which include the 2010 Honda Insight and the Civic. The 2009 Honda Civic is still a great fuel efficient vehicle with proven reliability. Insight has all the new great tools and green technology to provide drivers with accurate fuel efficiency.

Electric cars are growing in higher demand than ever before. Automakers are converting their popular models with new plug in options and hybrid batteries. The industry is changing and the future brings clean energy and fewer carbon emissions.

The Honda Insight is a new fuel-efficient automobile which delivers an MPG rating of 40 in the city and 43 on the highway. It offers 5 doors and seats up to five passengers including the driver. Insight was designed and built from the ground up.

The eco-friendly vehicle also features a new projector-beam headlight which provides better roadway lighting for greater visibility. Insight comes equipped with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) which substitutes the gears found in more traditional transmissions and replaces them with a metal push-belt running between a pair of variable-width pulleys. The CVT includes the Drive-by-Wire throttle system which constantly adjusts to providing the most efficient drive ratio possible depending on the torque load.

Honda Civic Hybrid is powered by a 1.3-liter i-VTEC engine with Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) gasoline-electric hybrid technology to enhance both fuel economy and performance. The car is equipped with a continuously variable transmission. The hybrid vehicle is classified as Advanced Technology Partial Zero Emissions Vehicles (AT-PZEV).

The IMA hybrid technology achieves an EPA-estimated city/highway fuel economy of 40/45 miles per gallon. It is also interesting to note that the car can deactivate all four of its cylinders and operate using only the electric motor in certain low-speed cruising situations. The electric motor has 15 kilowatts and can produce a combined 110-horsepower.

The Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System has a 6.5-inch motorized display that opens and closes for access to the internal single-disc CD player. The system also includes a digital audio-card reader that can play MP3 and Windows Media 3 Audio (WMA) files from CompactFlash 4 cards. The navigation system features more than 7 million points of interest and the voice activation can control the navigation menus and the audio system, along with entering city and street names.

Honda is also expected to deliver a new hybrid minivan next year which resembles the Odyssey and the Estima, which are already selling in Japan. The 2010 electric car line-up with hybrid technologies is looking good.

My guess is that this would be for the Japanese market only, but could morph into an eventual Hybrid Stream coming to North America!

'New GM' to emerge from bankruptcy

Ailing automaker seeks court protection today
June 01, 2009 Tony Van Alphen
BUSINESS REPORTER

Canadian taxpayers will provide reeling General Motors Corp. with $9.5 billion (U.S.) in aid and take a 12 per cent stake in the once mighty automaker, which will seek court protection from creditors today.

In the biggest corporate rescue package in Canadian history, Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty will announce in Toronto this afternoon the repayable loan and what taxpayers will get in preferred and common stock under a restructuring plan to save the automaker and turn it into the "New GM."

GM, once the biggest company in the world, will file for court protection under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code in New York but it hopes to emerge in 60 to 90 days. It is not clear if GM of Canada Ltd. will file for protection here.

Protection in the U.S. will be automatic. A judge will decide during the 90 days who all the creditors are and will resolve disputes about how much holdout GM bondholders will get for their debt, payments to other creditors and expenditures by the company.

Under the plan, the money from both governments will be used during the bankruptcy process and subsequent transition into a healthy company.

U.S. President Barack Obama will announce about $30.1 billion in extra loans for the company. In return, American taxpayers will get $8.8 billion in debt and a 60 per cent interest in the company. In addition to its 12 per cent stake in the company, the Canadian government will get $1.7 billion in debt.

There will be a new GM board with a minority of existing directors and a majority of new members, including one from Canada.

Obama and Harper will emphasize at separate news conferences that the aid should put GM on sound financial footing with a viable plan that takes into account conservative projections for the future of the industry.

They will also say there are no plans for further aid and it is their intent to sell government-held stock in GM as soon as appropriate.

"The government has no desire to own equity stakes in a company any longer than necessary," one U.S. official said last night.

The moves come after GM submitted a new restructuring plan to the governments with more concessions from stakeholders, additional plant closures and lower projections on sales and market share.

Under the North American government aid package, Ottawa and Ontario will contribute $9.5 billion or $10.58 billion (Canadian), far more than the $3 billion the two governments promised in December. At that time Harper acknowledged taxpayers would probably need to provide more help.

The U.S. has already pumped $19.4 billion (U.S.) into GM, whose sales have plunged in the past year.

Government leaders in both countries have said that allowing the collapse of GM and rival Chrysler would push the Canadian and U.S. economies into a much deeper recession and cost millions of jobs.

GM will announce 11 more plant closures and idle three operations as part of the restructuring. However, industry insiders say the moves will not affect Canadian operations.

Chrysler LLC, also surviving on a government lifeline, gained court protection in the U.S. last month and hopes to emerge within days in a partnership with Italian automaker Fiat SpA. Their Canadian subsidiary did not seek court protection.

GM has not indicated it will stop production in the U.S. or Canada during bankruptcy proceedings.

GM files for bankruptcy protection

I guess we all saw this coming....
General Motors Corp. filed for bankruptcy protection in court in New York City on Monday, a move that will clear the way for a sweeping reshaping of the iconic company.

"The economic crisis has caused enormous disruption in the auto industry, but with it has come the opportunity for us to reinvent our business," said GM CEO Fritz Henderson.

"We are going to do it once and do it right. The court-supervised process we are pursuing provides us with powerful tools to accelerate and complete our reinvention, as well as strong safeguards for our customers and our business," he said in a written statement.

In its filing in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in the Southern District of New York, GM said it had $82.29 billion US in assets and $172.81 billion in liabilities as of the end of March.

GM will follow the template set by the rapid restructuring of Chrysler LLC. On Sunday night, a U.S. judge approved the sale of most of Chrysler's assets to Fiat. Chrysler entered government-sponsored bankruptcy protection in April and could re-emerge this week.

Canadian Auto Workers president Ken Lewenza said he would be "incredibly surprised" if all of GM's Canadian plants stayed open while the U.S. parent firm is in bankruptcy protection. A similar situation happened at Chrysler's Canadian plants in April.

In advance of the formal announcement from GM, a dealership — Chevrolet-Saturn of Harlem Inc. — filed for bankruptcy protection. The dealership's filing also said a new company — dubbed Auto Acquisition Corp. — will be created to form the "new GM." Auto Acquisition will acquire most of GM's assets as part of the revamp under creditor protection.

The filing confirms that Albert Koch will become GM's chief restructuring officer. He aided Kmart Corp. through its own reorganization under creditor protection.

U.S. President Barack Obama is expected to hold a news conference at the White House at 11:55 a.m. ET to address the bankruptcy announcement and outline the length of the process, which could last from 60 to 90 days in court.

Fritz Henderson, will speak in New York at 12:15 p.m. ET. Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Minister of Industry Tony Clement and Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty will speak at 1 p.m. ET.

Administration officials told The Associated Press on Sunday the U.S. federal government will pump $30 billion US into GM as it makes its way through bankruptcy court. The automaker has already received $20 billion in government aid.

14 plants expected to close

The U.S. Treasury will get 60.8 per cent of the common equity of the new, revamped GM, while the Canadian and Ontario governments will take a 11.7 per cent stake in GM, and a United Auto Workers trust for health-care expenses would get 17.5 per cent, according to the reports.

Bondholders would receive a 10 per cent stake with the possibility of increasing their share to 25 per cent. Existing owners of GM's current common shares will likely get little, if anything, for their holdings, as often happens in similar situations.

GM also said it will speed up plans to cut 14 plants — which would reduce its number of assembly, powertrain and stamping plants from 47 in 2008 to 34 by the end of 2010 and 33 by 2012.

While none on the plants named on the list is in Canada, GM Canada has already said its hourly workforce will decline from 10,300 in 2008 to 4,400 in 2014. The GM Canada truck plant in Oshawa, Ont., recently ceased production.

If the restructuring process is successful, GM will emerge as a leaner company with a smaller work force, fewer plants and a trimmed dealership network. The company will move forward with four core brands — Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick and GMC. GM is dropping its Pontiac brand, and looking to sell its Saturn, Saab and Hummer brands.

The bankruptcy represents a dramatic downfall for GM, which was founded in 1908 by William C. Durant, who brought several car companies under one roof, and developed a strategy of "a car for every purse and purpose.
